Computers have now become an inevitable part of the metro life. Any industry depends on computers and laptops at least to a certain extent in order to get things done quickly and efficiently. At a basic level, one can start by outlining the parts of a computer and establishing the difference between hardware and software. Hardware is usually the tangible parts of a computer, for example, keyboard, monitor and so on. There are various definitions for software which imply that it is a set of instructions or procedure that enables the hardware to execute the specified task. Then, one can go on to explain the various types of computers, the operating systems etc. Operating system is a sort of interface between the user and the computer hardware. According to David Bolton, ‘an Operating System is a computer program that manages the resources of a computer. It accepts keyboard or mouse inputs from users and displays the results of the actions and allows the user to run applications, or communicate with other computers via networked connections’. In normal words, it is the interface between the user and the computer hardware. Some good examples are Windows XP Professional, Mac OS and so on.
One can also talk about the various applications of computers in different industries such as banking and insurance, education, entertainment, media, telecommunication, marketing and so on. These industries will be almost spineless without computers. Right from a simple name of a person to complex applications, everything is stored in a computer. In multimedia, computer is the platform on which things are done. Multimedia is simply a combination of different media like audio, video, text, animation and graphics. Software such as Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Page Maker, Maya, Flash, 3D Studio Max and many other are used to edit and create special effects, animation and so on. It is to be noted that most of these are just basic software. There is still a long way to go if one wants to specialize in a particular field. One can make a mention of this in the essay.
