Starting the introduction with quotes of great people or proverbs is good provided you show the relevance to your quote to the research paper that you are writing. Make sure that the quotes are highlighted, underlined or within double quotes.
Question:
In case your research paper talks about a problem, the best way to begin your paper is by asking a question. It should make the reader think about the problem.
Narrative:
You can start the introduction in a narrative way by stating an incident or a story as an account to the subject that you are discussing in the paper. It can be like an account of incident to the paper.
Contradiction:
You can also start the research paper introduction with a contradiction. For example, though Adam Smith is the father of economics, his theories are not accepted by many economists.
Facts:
The introduction can also start with interesting facts over the subject. These facts should be knowledgeable to the reader and should not be just information.
An introduction can begin in any of these ways or they can just start with the previous happenings of the subject just to give the reader an idea on what you are really going to talk about. It is not sufficient to just give the above beginnings and finish the introduction. You should give an idea to the readers on which area you are going to cover on the subject. A research paper introduction sometimes will help you by giving an idea on how to proceed with the paper. It might give you a small outline on how to write the paper. However you plan to write the introduction, it should be relevant and to the point and should create an interest to the readers over the topic that you are discussing in the paper.
