Introduction
The different types of formatting are the key to any presentation of your writing. These formatting styles are not just an essay format they are the formatting styles that are used not just for the content but also the presentation of your article. The two major formatting styles are:
• The APA formatting.
• MLA formatting.
Of the two, the APA referencing is the commonly used formatting style in colleges.
APA formatting:
Some of the general APA guidelines are as follows:
• Your essay should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1 inch margins on all sides.
• You should use 10-12 pt. Times New Roman font or a similar font.
• Include a page header in the upper right-hand of every page.
• To create a page header, type the first 2-3 words of the title of the paper, insert five spaces and then give the page number.
In the different types of formatting, APA formatting is used commonly in science projects. Your essay should have four major sections: title page, abstract, main body and references.
Citations:
When you have to write references, the following rules have to be followed:
• Capitalize the proper nouns, including author names and initials.
• If you refer to the title of a source that is within your paper, capitalize all words that are four or longer letters within the title of a source.
• When capitalizing titles, capitalize both words in a hyphenated compound word.
• Capitalize the first word after a dash or colon.
• Underline or italicize abstracts taken from books, edited collections, movies, television series, documentaries, or albums
• Put double quotes around the titles of shorter works such as journal articles, articles from edited collections, television series episodes, and song titles.
The next important type in the different types of formatting is:
MLA formatting:
The general guidelines are:
• Type your paper on a standard, white 8.5 x 11-inch paper,
• Double-space the text and font like Times Roman. The font size should be 12 point.
• Leave only one space after periods.
• Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides. Indent the first line of a paragraph one half-inch.
• Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
• Use either italics or underlining throughout your essay for the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary, providing emphasis.
• If you have any endnotes, include them on a separate page before your Works Cited page.
MLA formatting has specific rules and guidelines for formatting manuscripts and the usage of English in writing. It also provides a system for writers to reference their sources through parenthetical citation.
Citation rules:
Other people’s works are cited with what’s known as parenthetical citations.
• When you quote, author’s name space and the page number are written.
• When the work has an unknown author, use the short form of the work.
• When there are multiple sources, separate the citations by a semi-colon.
